Countries with the Most Borders — Geography Facts That Help You Win Travle

Updated March 2026

In Travle, knowing which countries border each other is everything. One misguessed border can cost you the game. Here are the countries with the most land borders — the hub nations that connect regions and continents.

The Top 10 by Number of Bordering Countries

1. Russia — 14 borders. Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (via Kaliningrad), Poland (via Kaliningrad), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. Russia's massive span across Europe and Asia makes it the ultimate connector in any Travle route that crosses continents.

2. China — 14 borders. Russia, Mongolia, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. China ties with Russia and is the gateway between Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

3. Brazil — 10 borders. French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. Brazil borders every South American country except Chile and Ecuador.

4. DR Congo — 9 borders. Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Angola. The DRC is the critical transit country for any route through central Africa.

5. Germany — 9 borders. Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Germany is the hub of European Travle routes — almost every route through Europe passes through it.

6. France — 8 borders. Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Spain, and Andorra. Plus the UK via the Channel Tunnel. France also borders Brazil through French Guiana — one of the most surprising connections in geography.

7. Turkey — 8 borders. Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. Turkey is the only route between Europe and the Middle East, making it one of the most important countries in Travle.

8. Tanzania — 8 borders. Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. The connector of East Africa.

9. Austria — 8 borders. Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Central Europe's crossroads.

10. Serbia — 8 borders. Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia. The Balkans hub.

Surprising Borders Most People Get Wrong

Russia and North Korea share a 17 km border along the Tumen River. This means you can route from Europe to East Asia through Russia without touching China.

France and Brazil share a 730 km border — the longest French international border. This is through French Guiana, which counts as part of France in most geography games.

Spain and Morocco are connected. Spain has territory in North Africa (Ceuta and Melilla), though some games do not count these exclaves as creating a playable border.

Denmark and Canada share a border on Hans Island in the Arctic — the only land border between North America and Europe.

Borders That Do Not Exist (But People Think They Do)

Morocco and Mauritania do not share a border. Western Sahara sits between them entirely.

Italy and France share a border, but Italy does not border Spain. You must go through France.

Thailand and Vietnam do not share a border. Laos or Cambodia sits between them.
